Haiku is one of the most widespread forms of traditional Japanese poetry. It is a short 3 verse composition with a metric of usually 5, 7 and 5 moras.

The mora is a unit of sound used in phonology that determines the syllabic weight in some languages; it is the unit above the segment and below the syllable, and is the basic rhythmic unit in Japanese.

His poetry is based on the surprise and embarrassment that the contemplation of nature produces in the poet. References to the stations are common and the use of adjectives is uncommon. The essence above the detail; the noun above the adjective.
The same goes, we might say, with the sumi-e as to the essence.
